The Wildlife Leadership Academy runs the Conservation Ambassadors Program to engage and empower high school age youth on wildlife, fisheries and natural resource issues. It was really interesting to hear about my family and friends who actually fished that stream talk about the fish that they caught-the fish that we had stocked! It was a great experience to listen to these men talk about how they have spent most of their lives as hunters, fishermen, and conservationists. There were over 500 fish of different species: rainbow, brown, and golden trout. We waded most of the way, throwing fish out into the stream as we went along. Turns out he was not joking, but the next two and a half hours were awesome. He said the trip would take two and a half hours, and Sophia and I thought he was joking! We weren’t entirely sure what that meant, but we excitedly agreed. One of the men there asked Sophia and I if we were going down stream with the float box. We started the morning by taking fish from the stock truck down to the float box in buckets. I met my good friend and fellow Wildlife Leadership Academy Conservation Ambassador, Sophia Zalar, at the bridge at Pollock’s Mill early in the morning on November 14. This fall I had the amazing opportunity to stock fish with the Izaak Walton League. HuntFishPA replaces the previous Pennsylvania Automatic Licensing System (PALS) platform known as The Outdoor Shop. Visitors to HuntFish.pa.gov will find new features like personalized dashboards, auto-renewal for fishing licenses, and the ability to report game and furbearer harvests as required. They also announced that all volunteers must follow COVID protocols of masking and social distancing during the stocking.Īlso new this spring for sportsmen is the new HuntFishPa website, a user-friendly licensing platform for hunters, anglers, and boaters in Pennsylvania. This year, the Fish and Boat Commission will only allow existing, previously registered volunteers to help. Unfortunately for those who like to follow the stock trucks and help the Fish Commission officials to stock local streams, many will not be able to do it this year. These licenses will remain valid through the 2021 fishing season since last year’s mentored youth fishing day was canceled due to the pandemic. There is also some good news for youth who got their 2020 Voluntary Youth Fishing license last year. The Pennsylvania trout season will start two years earlier than last year.”įishing in ponds, lakes, and reservoirs will still be legal after February 15, but it must be “catch and release only,’ meaning you cannot harvest a fish until April 3.
